mindfulness, how to feel happier, mental health, headcase, happiness, mhbloggers,

Hello!

With life being so busy and stressful sometimes it can be hard to appreciate the little things or feel happy even when you are a positive person generally.

When times get tough is when we have to make the effort to appreciate the little things that make us happy and the positive things we have going for ourselves. That being said though, sometimes in this modern fast paced world it can be hard to pick things out. I say go back to basics. You will find that if you really think about it, you have lots of stuff to be thankful for and be happy about and it is probably the simplest things you love most.

Take the time to revisit the simple things and I guarantee you will feel happier. Just in case you need a push though, here are my top 14 ways to feel happier (and appreciative).

1) LOOK AT OLD PHOTOS OF GREAT MEMORIES.

Sometimes nothing makes us smile more than revisiting old memories like parties in carefree youth or hazy holidays. It is a great way to remember who you were as a youth before the responsibilities of adulthood and remind yourself of how many great things you have done and good times you have had.

2) PLAN YOUR NEXT TRIP.

While looking at old holiday photos is great it may leave you feeling a bit flat so why not plan where your next trip is going to be? You can work out costs of flights and hotels then make up a saving plan to ensure you book it. Print off a picture of where you want to go and keep it on your fridge as an incentive.

3) GO FOR A LONG WALK.

Try and do this as much as possible. Especially after a stressful day. You will find this makes you feel so much better. It really is one of lifes best tonics.

4) TEXT ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE YOU HAVE BEEN MEANING TO.

We all get caught up with life but why not take ten minutes to reply to all of those messages you have wanted to rely to or text that friend you have been meaning to speak to for ages. If there is only one particular individual, better yet, call them. There is no better feeling than catching up with friends and it may lead to exciting plans to meet up again (it should do anyway!).

5) TRY SOMETHING NEW.

Once a week, do something new whether it is signing up for a new course or taking up a new hobby. Eating at a new place each week, cooking yourself a new recipe for dinner or whatever you want or can afford. Something that you commit to one night or day a week that takes your mind completely off of work and real life. Family film night or picnics in the park are another good idea.

6) PUT YOUR FAVOURITE PLAYLIST ON.

Or album. Whatever works best for you. I find that music makes me feel SO much better. I love just having the radio on at home when I am doing stuff indoors as it keeps me entertained and makes me happy.

7) PUT DOWN YOUR PHONE AND TABLET.

This is definitely a great way to switch off. Make a pact that you will have one night at least without technology. Better yet, every night at a certain time make a pact to switch everything off to unwind.

8) PLAY BOARD GAMES.

There is nothing better than board games with the family! If you don't have any and don't want to spend much hunt your local charity shops for some of the classics. It is a great way to switch off from life while keeping your brain active. Win - win.

9) WRITE DOWN THE STUFF YOU'RE GRATEFUL FOR.

This will make you feel a lot happier. Be honest and be as simple as you want. Anything that makes you happy whether it is a new vase you bought lately or seeing your friends.

10) ORGANISE YOUR ROOM.

This always makes me feel much better! I can't stand clutter or disorganisation. Once my wardrobe is de-cluttered and my office peace is tidied and unnecessary paperwork filed or put in recycling I feel much much better.

11) WATCH YOUR FAVOURITE FILM.

Similarly to listening to your favourite album, this will definitely put you in a good mood.

12) SORT OUT THE GARDEN.

Get your outside space as tidy and tranquil as you can so you can enjoy it on warm days and milder evenings. A garden project is a great distraction from every day life too.

13) PAMPER YOURSELF.

Run a nice bath, make a face mask or hair mask or paint your nails. Any kind of beauty treatment that makes you feel better about yourself is worth taking the time to do.

14) DRINK WATER AND EAT HEALTHY FOOD.

I had to sneak it in somewhere didn't I? We all know it helps us feel good so we should definitely be doing it, especially when life is a bit stressful! When times are hard it is easy to eat crap and drink excessive amounts of alcohol but DON'T. This is the time that it is most important to be taking care of yourself.
